Hurricane Irene Aftermath in New Brunswick, New Jersey - August 28, 2011

My home in New Brunswick was unaffected by Hurricane Irene, as were most parts of the city that were not near the Raritan River. For Route 18, the main artery into the city, however, it was a different story. The day after the storm I walked down with my camera to see if there was any damage. What I encountered was an incredible spontaneous public space. Much like with "Carmageddon" in Los Angeles, with Route 18 out of commission, the fabric of society did not fall apart. For a brief time, this road, which is notably pedestrian and bike unfriendly, was retaken by people. The pictures speak for themselves here.
